How to Find Your Design Style

Everyone has different artistic taste and no two people have the exact same style when it comes to designing a space.
Some things I have been reflecting on in this past week is how my design style has developed and how it may be the reason I have had to turn away some design project opportunities. I thought it was just that I lacked experience, but it was really that I had a challenge figuring out the client's particular design style. Something I have been hearing more of is that I need to choose a personal design to reach a specific clientele who adheres to a similar taste as me. Obviously each project is different, but here are some things to consider when trying to hone in on a style (or styles) you prefer. These can be helpful not just with interior design, but in figuring out your personal fashion style as well. Finding my fashion style has helped me develope my design style immensely.
Reflect on your:
Personal Values
What do you value in life? How much do you value material items? Personally I am trying to adhere to a minimalist lifestyle so I ask myself "do I love it?" If not, I give it away (not counting necessary items).
This is one of my favorite YouTube channels (of the few I actually watch).
Check it out if you're interested in the minimalist lifestyle:
Lifestyle
Are you a homebody or out all the time? Neat freak or more relaxed? Do you like a more "cozy" look or sleek? Would you like to come home to a "castle-like" interior? Or would that stress you out (personally it would stress me out).
Color Preferences
Colors have a big impact on mood (I plan to do a whole separate blog post on this in the future). When picking out clothing do you tend to go for more neutrals or bright colors? This can also have something to do with personality.
These are just a few of the many factors that can help someone figure out what their design style is. I will link them below!
In addition to these, there are many style quizzes developed by various designers that you can take. I encourage you not to be stuck in the boundaries of your style. Although I lean towards more Japandi and Modern, I adore Spanish style Architecture.
Lastly, your style should come naturally to you. Close your eyes and just image your dream space. Pinterest is also helpful! Just keep pinning and see what you put together!
